 What Does Mr. Billy Do?

Mr. Billy primarily works with children and families at Schools, Libraries & Special Events. His most requested programs include School Assembly Concerts, Classroom Visits, Workshops Artist in Residencies.  A large part of these programs are based on either the SIX-TRAITS of WRITING or Books & Reading.

He also works at libraries, creating a new summer reading concert program each year to match the national theme.  The rest of his schedule is fill with KEYNOTE and WORKSHOP public speaking at conventions and conferences for teachers and early childhood specialist and daycare providers along with some fairs, festivals, Kids Expos and occasional parties or celebrations.  Here are some more details about his various programs...

SIX-TRAITS OF WRITING ASSEMBLY CONCERTS

Before you move on to the programs please read this quick note from Mr. Billy-

Hello! If helping students achieve excellence in writing is one of our shared goals, let me take a moment to remind you that repetition rich with “educational anchors” can help make the difference with most students' attitudes and test scores. To achieve long term results I would like to recommend booking Six-Traits assembly concert followed by TUNE-UP programs  on a regular (annual) basis.  There are three times during the school year that seem to have the best impact for students (and teachers too):

FALL- As soon as possible in the school year (September-October).  This is a great way to introduce new students to writing traits and create strong “memory hooks” and "educational anchors" for students who have seen or worked with Mr. Billy in the past.

WINTER-Immediately after winter break (January-February). Hosting a program during this time of the year can help students return to the learning track in a fun way. Many principals feel that this timing help with focus and may improve test scores.

SPRING- Usually just before summer break and occasionally used in place of a field trip. One way to help students to stay on track during the summer months is to get them excited on their own terms about writing.  A spring program inspires students to keep summer journal/diaries and continue to read instead of watching TV.

Here is how it works…

As I visit schools on a regular basis, the students become familiar with Mr. Billy and look forward to my visits. On both a conscious and subconscious level, they begin to associate (anchor) the traits of writing with a Mr. Billy concert. The basic equation is Mr. Billy + Writing = FUN! For that reason I create new scripts for my writing assembly programs each year that help turn a potentially boring subject into an exciting one.  To get the best results for your students I now offer thee different six-traits of writing assemblies updated and revised each year, they are:

“Write to the Beat” K-6 – 45 minutes assembly
This is a one-size-fits-all program.  All six-traits of writing are covered in a fun and interactive way.  This program is a very good introduction to the six-traits of writing.

“Six-Traits Rock!” K-2 – 45 minutes assembly
For the younger writer, this program focuses on the traits of IDEAS, ORGANIZATION and WORD CHOICE.  More music, songs, interaction and movement.

“Six-Traits in Action” 3-6 – 45 minutes assembly
In this version, all writing traits are covered with extra emphasis on IDEAS, VOICE and WORD CHOICE. Students are shown examples of how the traits are used, how students at other schools have used the traits, and are prompted to give examples. Highly interactive and engaging.

OTHER SCHOOL ASSEMBLY CONCERTS

“Reading is Magic” - 45 minute assembly
Books, books, books idea for K-3 or book fairs

“Get Up and Do Something Fun” - 45 minute assembly
Lots of movement for K-2

“Just for Fun” - 45 minute concert
Great choice for turn off the TV week, family night, book fairs, school carnival, fund raisers or just for fun!

ARTIST IN RESIDENCY AND WORKSHOPS

“Six-Traits in a Day” – K-6 One day writing workshop.
5 groups will collaborate in the creation and recording of an original song.  Each group will focus on one writing trait and then hand it off to the next group.  At a final showcase assembly, the students will see how every trait was used to create their writing project.  A professionally recorded master CD of the song featuring your students is included (which can be freely copied and distributed for school use, additional family keepsake CDs can be purchased from Mr. Billy). Call for more details.

“Write to the Beat” - K-6, 3 days.
The original six-traits of writing artist in residency program is entering its 5th successful year. 5 groups each compose their own original songs using all six- traits of writing.  A final afternoon (or evening) family showcase concert along with a professionally recorded master CD featuring all five songs sung by your students is also included (which can be freely copied and distributed for school use, additional family keepsake CDs can be purchased from Mr. Billy). Call for more details.
